DAY 2 | Faith Hacks
Borrowing Faith
"Right away the boy's father cried out, 'I do believe! Help me overcome my unbelief!'"
Mark 9:24 NIRV
Have you ever struggled with feeling like you don't have enough belief? It's easy to wonder when life doesn't go the way we planned if somehow, it's our fault. And hopefully, no one has ever told you that tragedy must be because "you just didn't have enough faith." Or you're like me, hearing Jesus say that if you just had a mustard seed of faith, then you could command mountains to move. But no matter how much you yell; the mountains stand still.
If we are to take Jesus at his word, then we must conclude that even compared to a mustard seed my faith amounts to little, and it's easy to be discouraged when we feel like our faith is lacking. But it doesn't mean that we are lacking. It isn't a criticism of our faith. It doesn't make us a bad Christians because we don't have to have enough faith. In Mark 9:24, the father cries out on behalf of his son who is sick. He is asking Jesus to heal his son from the illness no one else can, and even in his unbelief, Jesus does.
Faith covering faith.
Even greater is the grace covering our faith. If you have ever seen a mustard seed, you know just how small it actually is. So small a kernel of popcorn looks giant sitting next to it. And if that is the faith that moves mountains, then how small is the faith required to be saved? How small is the faith required to be able to follow Jesus? And when we need it most, how great is the faith that can cover our faithlessness? Keep in mind when you face the challenges of life, you don't have to face them alone, and when your faith feels less than enough, there is a savior and a church that you can lean on.
Let's make that our prayer today.
Prayer
"Father, when my faith is not enough, let me be surrounded by others whose faith is strong, and let me depend on you, the God who is full of faith. Amen."
Reflection
How would you measure the size of your faith? When in your life have you felt like you lacked the faith needed? Whose faith can you lean on when life gets hard?
