The Missing Peace - Peace in Troubled Times

Let's be real—Christmas isn't always wrapped up in neat little packages. For some, it's a season of joy and celebration. For others, it's a time of family challenges, financial stress, or overwhelming busyness. Wherever you find yourself today, you're in the right place.

The first Christmas wasn't perfect either. It was messy. The genealogy of Jesus in Matthew is filled with broken people—people like David, who made devastating mistakes, or Rahab, who had a rough past. The situation surrounding Jesus' birth was far from ideal. Mary, a young woman, had to explain an unplanned pregnancy. She traveled 90 miles on foot or donkey while nine months pregnant, and when the time came, there wasn't even a proper room—just a barn filled with dirt and hay.

Yet into this imperfect world, Jesus was born—the Prince of Peace. God's message to a world full of chaos and brokenness was simple: Fear not. In Luke 2:10, the angel told the shepherds, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy." This wasn't just a call to ignore fear but an invitation to something greater—peace amid life's storms.

Here's the truth: Peace isn't the absence of problems; it's the presence of God. God's peace isn't dependent on perfect circumstances. The Hebrew word "shalom" means completeness, well-being, and rest—even when things around you don't make sense. And the reason we don't have to fear? Because of the greatest gift ever given—Jesus, who came to show us perfect love.

Love is the antidote to fear. 1 John 4:18 says, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear." When we lean into God's love, fear loses its grip. This Christmas, let's remember that love came down in the form of a baby born in Bethlehem, and that love carries us through tough times. So, whether your Christmas is picture-perfect or perfectly messy, know this: You are loved by God.

Pray with us!

Lord, thank You for the gift of Your love and the peace that comes with it. Help us to trust You in the midst of our challenges and to find rest in Your perfect love. Remind us that peace isn't about what's happening around us but about who You are in our lives. This Christmas, help us keep our focus on You, the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Let's Reflect:

What are some ways you've experienced peace in the middle of a tough situation? How does the reminder of God's love help you navigate fear or anxiety? The angel said, "Fear not." What fears are you holding onto that you need to surrender to God?
