Comfort | Less is More
We've been talking about the idea that sometimes less really is more, and nowhere does that hit closer to home than with comfort. Let's be honest, most of us love being comfortable.
Cozy beds, stretchy clothes, warm coffee, climate control, and fast everything. Comfort isn't bad. It's a gift. God even calls the Holy Spirit our Comforter. He comforts us, and then turns around and uses us to comfort others. That's beautiful.
But comfort makes a terrible goal. When comfort becomes the thing we chase, growth usually gets left behind. Jesus said it straight: if you want to follow Him, you deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow. That's not exactly a spa day. But He also promised that losing your life for His sake is how you actually find it. Less of us. More of Him. Less short-term comfort. More long-term life.
We see this play out every day. The comfortable choice is often the easy one right now, but it usually costs us later. It's easier to sit than move, to avoid the hard conversation, to say yes when we should say no, to grab convenience instead of choosing what's healthy.
But the uncomfortable choices, like moving our bodies, setting boundaries, being disciplined, taking responsibility... those are the ones that lead to freedom, strength, and joy.
God cares about our whole lives, including our bodies. Scripture calls our bodies temples of the Holy Spirit. Choosing health isn't about vanity or perfection—it's stewardship. It's saying, "God, I want to be available. I want energy to love people well, strength to serve, and margin to show up for the people I care about."
Sometimes honoring God means making a small, uncomfortable choice today that leads to a much better tomorrow.
So as we step into a new season, maybe the invitation isn't to be harder on ourselves—but to be more intentional. To practice doing hard things on purpose. To use the power God already gave us to choose. To do what we can, and trust God to do what we can't. Less comfort. More life. Less excuses. More freedom. When less is more, God does His best work in us.
Pray With Me!
God, thank You for loving us enough to call us into growth, not just comfort. Help us recognize where we've chosen easy over healthy and convenience over purpose. Give us the courage to make uncomfortable choices that honor You and bring life. Teach us to trust You with our limits and lean into Your strength. We want less of us and more of You. Amen.
Let's Reflect:
Where in your life have you been choosing comfort over growth without realizing it? What is one small, uncomfortable choice you could make this week that would lead to long-term good? How might caring for your body be a way of honoring God and loving others better?
