Joseph | Against All Odds
Some stories in Scripture don't just inspire...they reframe everything. The story of Joseph is one of those. It unfolds like a perfectly timed three-act drama: the setup, the struggle, and the resolution.
Or, to put it another way, an opening move, a long battle, and eventually… checkmate. Joseph's life looks anything but strategic at first. Favor turns into jealousy. Dreams turn into betrayal. A pit becomes slavery. Integrity leads to prison. From the outside, it looks like loss after loss, step after step in the wrong direction.
But God is never reacting. He's always planning.
While others are playing checkers, focusing only on what's right in front of them, God is playing chess. He sees the whole board. He knows what's coming ten moves ahead. Opposition doesn't catch Him off guard. Temptation doesn't derail His purpose. Even injustice doesn't interrupt His plan.
That doesn't mean God causes evil, betrayal, or suffering. But it does mean none of it is wasted. Joseph's descent wasn't punishment—it was preparation. In the pit, in the house, and in the prison, God was shaping character, deepening trust, and positioning Joseph for influence that would one day save lives. What looked like delay was actually development. What felt like isolation was still marked by God's presence—again and again Scripture says, "The Lord was with him."
The same pattern shows up throughout Scripture. Jesus descended before He was exalted. Servanthood came before glory. The cross came before the resurrection. What looked like defeat to the enemy turned out to be God's ultimate checkmate.
And that truth still holds today.
When life feels like it's moving backward… when obedience seems to cost more than it gives… when waiting feels endless… God is still playing chess. Nothing is random. Nothing is unseen.
And nothing is final until God says it is.
Pray With Me!
God, thank You for seeing the whole picture when only part of it is visible. Help trust grow in seasons of waiting, resistance, and uncertainty. Strengthen hearts to stand firm in temptation, remain faithful in the descent, and believe that nothing surrendered to You is ever wasted. Teach patience, deepen faith, and remind every heart that You are always at work—one move ahead. Amen.
Let's Reflect:
Where does life currently feel like it's moving in the "wrong direction," and how might God be using this season for preparation rather than punishment? What forms of opposition or temptation might actually be signs that God is at work beneath the surface? What would it look like to trust God's long-term plan instead of reacting to the immediate moment?
