Matter of Purpose | Relationship Matters
Marriage is a gift. A beautiful, messy, refining, and life-giving gift from God. But let's be real—marriage isn't easy. Even the strongest relationships have their struggles. Maybe that's why Proverbs 31:10 says, "A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies." A healthy marriage is a treasure, but it takes work, sacrifice, and most importantly, a deep understanding of its purpose.
Today, marriage is facing some real challenges. Fewer people are choosing it, and many of those who do struggle to stay in it. Our culture has shifted marriage from being about commitment and partnership to being about personal fulfillment—and that subtle change has placed impossible expectations on relationships. Instead of asking, How can I serve my spouse? people are asking, How does this relationship serve me? And when the answer is "not enough," they move on.
But God designed marriage to be so much more than personal happiness—it's about growth, companionship, and reflecting His love. Genesis 2:18 tells us, "It is not good for man to be alone." That's not just about romance but God's intent for deep, meaningful relationships that refine us and draw us closer to Him.
Ephesians 5:31-32 calls marriage a mystery that mirrors Christ's love for the Church. This means marriage isn't just about two people making each other happy; it's about learning to love sacrificially, just as Christ loves us. It's about commitment in the face of difficulty, choosing grace over resentment, and building something bigger than ourselves.
The strongest marriages aren't made up of two perfect people, but of two people who commit to love, forgive, and serve each other daily. The secret to a lasting, joy-filled marriage? Mutual fulfillment through mutual sacrifice. When both partners seek to put the other first, something incredible happens—love deepens, intimacy grows, and marriage becomes a source of strength rather than stress.
Pray With Us!
Lord, thank You for the gift of marriage and the relationships You've placed in our lives. Help us to love like You do—selflessly, patiently, and with grace. For those who are married, give them strength to serve one another. For those who are waiting, remind them that their worth is found in You. And for all of us, teach us how to reflect Your love in every relationship we have. Amen.
Let's Reflect:
How does our culture's view of marriage differ from God's design? What does "mutual fulfillment through mutual sacrifice" mean to you? How can we practice selfless love in our closest relationships?
