Forgiveness Math | Hidden in Plain Sight

Have you ever tried to calculate how many times you should forgive someone? Peter did! In Matthew 18:21, he asked Jesus, "Lord, how many times should I forgive someone? Up to seven times?" Seven seems generous, right? But Jesus blew his mind: "Not seven times, but seventy times seven!" In other words, there's no limit. Forgive endlessly.

Forgiveness is hard. Let's be honest. People hurt us, frustrate us, and sometimes downright annoy us. Your spouse steals the blanket again, your kid spills juice on the floor, your coworker takes credit for your idea—or the Aggies win again (ouch!). We all have reasons to hold grudges. But here's the kicker: we're holding onto something that isn't ours. When we refuse to forgive, it's like carrying around a bag full of rotten potatoes. Heavy, smelly, and a total drag.

Unforgiveness doesn't punish anyone but you. It eats away at your peace, your joy, and even your health.

God has forgiven us an impossible debt. We were sinners, yet He poured out grace through Jesus' sacrifice. That forgiveness is not just for our benefit—it's a model for how we live with others. When we forgive, we set ourselves free. When we extend grace, we reflect the heart of God.

Forgiveness is courageous. It's not excusing sin. It's not trying to be nice. It's choosing to release the debt someone owes you—because God has already erased ours. And here's the secret: every time we forgive, even when it's hard, we taste a little of heaven on earth.

Pray With Me!

Lord, thank You for forgiving me when I didn't deserve it. Help me to extend that same grace to others, even when it's hard. Free me from bitterness, and fill my heart with Your peace and love. Teach me to forgive as You have forgiven me. Amen.

Let's Reflect:

Who in your life do you need to forgive, even if it feels impossible? How does remembering God's forgiveness toward you make it easier to forgive others? What's one small, practical step you can take this week to release a grudge or resentment?
