Being Pure in an Unpure World | Dear Church

Let's be real—talking about sexual purity is exactly no one's idea of fun. It's uncomfortable, messy, and hits a nerve because it's something all of us wrestle with in one way or another. But here's the truth: God isn't afraid to talk about it, which means neither should we. In 1 Thessalonians 4, Paul lays it out boldly: "It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality…" (1 Thess. 4:3).

God's not trying to steal our fun—He's inviting us to something far better. Real intimacy. Deep connection. Lasting satisfaction. Sexual desire isn't bad—it's a gift. But when that gift gets opened in the wrong time, place, or context, it creates confusion, pain, and heartache.

Paul reminds this brand-new church in Thessalonica (just a year old!) that following Jesus means learning a new way to live—one that honors our bodies, our hearts, and others. He says don't live like people who don't know God, running wild in lust. Instead, live a life that's set apart.

Lust is a sneaky little thing; it isn't just about what we do—it starts in our thoughts. You don't have to go looking for it; it finds you. One click, one scroll, one glance can take us somewhere we never intended to go. That's why Paul says: take this seriously. Control your body. Honor God with it. Don't treat people as objects. Don't play with fire and expect not to get burned.

But here's the good news: we're not fighting this battle alone. Jesus offers grace for every failure, strength for every temptation, and joy that runs deeper than any thrill lust could offer. When we fill our lives with God's presence, His purpose, and His goodness, we stop settling for cheap imitations.

You're not too far gone. You're not too broken. God's grace runs deeper than your mess. So today, take a step toward freedom. Ask Him for help. Embrace His grace. And let's fight for the purity He's called us to—not out of shame, but out of a desire for something more.

Pray With Us!

Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your grace. We're so thankful that You don't turn away from us. Help us to take purity seriously and to live lives that honor You. Fill our hearts so full of Your love and presence that we stop settling for less. Give us strength, give us wisdom, and surround us with people who will walk this road with us.

Let's Reflect:

What boundaries do you have in place to protect your heart and mind from temptation? How does understanding God's grace help you deal with past failures in this area? What's one step you can take this week to pursue purity and honor God with your body and thoughts?
